How to start using Boom Cards in your piano studio

Have you heard of Boom Cards, but not sure where to start? I’ve got you covered.

Boom Cards (also called Boom Decks) are digital task cards that are played on the platform boomlearning.com. They can be played on almost any device including tablets, computers, and phones.

Here are some reasons why teachers love Boom cards:

  • they are an engaging and fun way for students to practice concepts & skills
  • they are self correcting (the game will tell the student if they are right or wrong)
  • they are digital (zero prep, they can be played on any ipad, tablet, computer, or smartboard)
  • they are useful for assessment when observing skills

My students love playing Boom Cards sitting at the piano OR sitting on the floor for a bit of a change of scenery.

Warm-up: You can use Boom Cards at the start of the lesson to help students warm-up their hands on the piano. These pre-staff flashcards are honestly the most VALUABLE warm up for beginner students and you can find out why here.

My students also love these sight-reading decks that they play right at the piano. They observe the measure of music, play it while saying the note names out loud, then tap the correct note names.

Practicing Concepts: As students are working on a concept, they can strengthen their understanding through regular Boom card practice. Here’s an example of an intervals deck that help students get lots of practice identifying harmonic intervals:

Assessment: At the end of a unit or after practicing a concept, Boom cards can be used to assess your students’ learning. Boom cards are self correcting, which means they show the student right away if their answers were right or wrong!

I highly recommend trying out some freebies to get started. You can download this beginner piano deck for FREE. from my TPT shop. You will just need to make a free Boom Learning account to access the deck.

Did you know? You can also print entire Boom Decks from your Boom Library (you can laminate them and use them as task cards or clip cards) and you can also assign them digitally for at-home practice! The possibilities are truly endless!
