Valentine’s Day Piano Lesson Activities

Valentine’s Day is such a sweet celebration in the piano studio! I usually start pulling out Valentine’s activities around Feb. 1st and keep them going all month long. Let’s chat about activity ideas you can use in your piano lessons.

🩷Sensory Bin Activities

These sensory bin activities are a huge hit in my studio. Students pull out a card from the bin and record it on the coloring or tracing sheet. I’ve included three different ways to play (finger number activity, keyboard geography activity, and music alphabet activity) PLUS included differentiated recorded sheets for each activity.

I recommend this activity for preschool and primer piano students. If you’re looking for tips on setting up a sensory bin in your piano studio, this blog post can help you get started.

🩷Song Writing

The next activity is a melodic composition idea. Students use Valentine’s Day words to create their own song. All you need is some staff paper – and I’ve got you covered with this free Valentine’s Day themed paper in my TPT shop:

Here are the steps:

  1. First, brainstorm some Valentine’s Day-themed words such as candy hearts, flowers, chocolate, etc.
  2. On a whiteboard or scrap paper, write down the words in a row and clap the rhythm of the words (you could also notate the rhythms)
  3. Have students select a hand position and try out different note sequences using the rhythm.
  4. Once students are happy with their melody, they can begin notating it on the staff. We used hearts for a fun twist!

I love that this activity can be worked on over the course of a few lessons. For students who can add another level of challenge, add chord symbols for the left hand to play.

🩷 Rhythm Boom Cards

The next game can be paired with the composition activity as a way to brainstorm Valentine’s Day rhythms, or played on it’s own! In this Boom Deck, students are shown a Valentine’s Day picture. They can clap the rhythm of the word, then select the correct rhythm box.

🩷 Scavenger Hunt Game

If your students love games, this scavenger hunt game is a fun and festive way to review note & rest values.

Your students will search & find for hidden music symbols as they explore “Valentine Village” and read little riddles along the way!

I hope you have a wonderful February in your studio or classroom!

Happy Teaching,

Emily
